These flowers were given to me by Chanthy when I arrived at the airport in Phnom Penh. The hotel maid put them in the ice container with some water and they lasted nearly a week.

After my tour of Thailand in December 2007, I extended my trip to Phnom Penh, Cambodia for the following 10 days - returning home on January 7, 2008.

BillJones > My welcoming committee in Phnom Penh. On the right is Channy, the student I am sponsoring to further her education in English and computers. On the left is her aunt, Chanthy. Our mode of transportation was this fancy "Tuk-Tuk" which was my main transportation around Phnom Penh while I was there. The cost was $20 per day. The driver was very knowledgeable about finding all the places I wanted to go.

BillJones > One of the first places I visited was this site, outside of Phnom Penh about 15 kilometers, known as "The Killing Fields." Its official name is Choeung Ek. It was here the Khmer Rouge brought prisoners from the infamous Tuol Sleng prison in Phnom Penh known as "S-21", to be executed and buried in mass graves. It is estimated that nearly 17,000 prisoners—men, women, and children—met this fate.

BillJones > This is the commemorative monument at Choeung Ek, which houses the skulls of hundreds of the victims who were killed and buried here by the Khmer Rouge.

BillJones > The sign on the right reads, "Juvenile - Female - From 15 to 20 yrs." This can be established because the Khmer Rouge brought prisoners from S-21 here to be killed according to categories. One night it would be children; another night it would be older women; yet another night it would be young females, etc. The Khmer Rouge at S-21 kept meticulous records and pictures of who was incarcerated, how they were tortured, what they eventually confessed to, and how and when they were killed.

BillJones > Outsiders view these skulls and think of the genocide as a terrible time in Cambodian history. Cambodians view these remains and wonder if it is their mother, or father, or an uncle, a brother, or a sister.
